If you are planning on doing your own thing, there are mountain bike trails in - or near - virtually every town or city in South Africa. And moving into the countryside, farms, forestry companies and conservation groups (game reserves and nature reserves) have opened up their lands for the responsible use by mountain bikers - often with comfortable accommodation options.

If it is mountain bike events you are after, then this is mecca. We have a mountain bike event calendar second to none - with multiple events happening across the country every weekend. A phenomenon that has taken hold in South Africa are the multi-day staged events. The Cape Epic, Sani to Sea, Imana Wild Ride and many others have captured the imaginations of the die-hard mountain bikers. 

South Africa’s weather allows for mountain biking any time of the year, and every province in South Africa offers mountain biking opportunities in some form or another - the sport is well established, well supported and sure to satisfy any level of rider.

And if you are planning on doing a tour, or an escorted trip, there are fantastic options all over South and Southern Africa. In Cape Town, try a wine tasting trip, do a trail on Table Mountain, or a tour to Cape Point (part of the Table Mountain National Park). There are a number of operators running trips into the iconic Harkerville Forest outside Knysna. And for the really adventurous, try the stunning escorted bike tour in the Kruger National Park. You can rent bikes in most centres, and you’ll find a bike shop in almost every town.
